Referee Risk Management Guidance (v3)

Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) requires referees 18 and older to have a Risk Management certification to referee any MSYSA match.

The Michigan RefereeCommittee (MRC) requires ALL USSF Michigan referees, regardless of whether they officiate adult or youth matches, to have a risk management approval if they are 18 years of age or older. If you are turning 18 this year then you must to apply on or after your birthday since you need a valid RM certification to continue to referee after you turn 18.

The instructions below indicate Referee but also apply to Michigan Referee Assignor, Instructor, and Assessor.

First Time Application for Risk Management:
Click on the link below
https://www.gotsport.com/asp/officials/register.asp?RA_DirectorID=8710
This will take you to the spot to create a referee account by registering in the MSYSA GotSoccer system. After you fill in the basic required information (USSF Reg # is not required) and click Submit you will automatically be taken to your account. We are not using this system for referee assigning therefore simply Click on Home tab then click My Account and then Click on Background Check to submit a Background Report.

The Risk Management report status will be updated in your GotSoccer account typically in 1 to 3 days but up to 10 days. Upon approval, you will not receive an email, so after 3 days, check GotSoccer. After you are approved you will have a button displayed in your referee account to allow you to print out proof of RM certification. To check your account, follow the directions below (Printing or Saving your Risk Management Card). If you have misplaced your ID and Password then simply click Password Lookup. There will be a $10 charge for you to submit a Risk Management background check. You will need to pay this via credit card when you submit the actual RM background check.

Renewal of Risk Management
Got Soccer will send referee's alerts approximately one month prior to the expiration of their risk management check and bi-weekly reminders after it has expired.

You need to sign into your account using your GotSoccer account ID and Password to do Risk Management background checking. You should have received an email from MSYSA with your ID and Password. If you have misplaced your ID and Password then simply click Referee Password Lookup

Please go to your profile and verify/update your contact information. It is essential that you correctly indicate your Full Legal Name and Date of Birth so your Risk Management will be valid when submitted. You will need to have an approved risk management certification to be certified as a Michigan USSF official as well as to participate in MSYSA.

After updating your contact information (using the Contact tab,) then please go the Background Check Tab and verify your Risk Management. (All other tabs are not actively being used)

1) Check to see if MSYSA indicates you have an approved RM certification. If there is no approval showing then you can click Check Reports to see if you have a valid MSYSA RM certification.

2) If you believe you have a valid RM certification but it is not shown when you click Check Reports then please verify that you have your full legal name, date of birth, and correct current address indicated in you contact information. If after clicking Check Reports again and there is still no valid risk management found then contact Christy Mayhew at MSYSA via phone at 734-459-6220 or via email at cmayhew@michiganyouthsoccer.org   Please provide her your name, date of birth, Risk Management number and expiration date so she can review the situation.

3) If your RM certification is expired, then please Submit New Report. As in the past, there will be a $10 charge for you to submit a Risk Management background check. You will need to pay this via credit card when you make the actual RM background check submission. The results of the report submission should normally be returned in 1 to 3 days. You need to do your risk management certification through your GotSoccer account. The past approach of requesting a risk management through the MSYSA website is no longer available.
